Digital Radiology

Radiology at National Dental SunnysideOral exams are a critical part of preventative maintenance. They are also essential for diagnosing serious oral health conditions. However, there is only so much of the mouth that can be seen from a simple visual inspection. There is much more that lies hidden – the areas between your teeth, the roots of your teeth, your jawbone. X-rays are important for allowing these areas of your mouth to be brought to light. At National Dental Sunnyside, we use digital X-ray technology to capture these valuable images.

What are Digital X-Rays?

For years, X-ray technology relied on radiation to capture images of the interior of your mouth. Digital X-rays, on the other hand, rely on electronics to both capture and develop these images. An electronic sensor, which is attached to a computer, is placed into your mouth. We click a button on the computer to capture the image. Within seconds, the image appears on the computer’s monitor.

Easy Storage in Your Digital File

At National Dental, we store all of your information, including your digital X-rays, on a digital file, rather than in a physical file folder. With physical folders, there is a risk of your information and images getting lost or damaged. By using a digital folder, these risks are greatly reduced.

Reduced Exposure to Radiation

Traditional X-rays are captured using radiation. This radiation has raised much concern among many dental patients. As a result, patients avoid X-rays or even treatment altogether. Digital X-rays, however, use electronics to capture images. This greatly reduces your exposure to radiation. In many instances, radiation exposure is reduced upwards of 95%.

Less Impact on the Environment

Traditional X-rays need to be developed. This requires the use of harmful chemicals, which are not environmentally friendly. Digital X-rays appear almost instantly after they are taken, avoiding the need image development. This means no more harsh chemicals and a greatly reduced environmental impact.

Features for a Better View

With the help of specialized software, we can do a whole lot more with digital X-rays than we ever could before with traditional images. We can zoom in on suspect areas and enhance the images for more clarity. We can also change the color display of the image from negative to black and white, and even display in color. All of these features allow us to make a more complete, accurate diagnosis and create a customized, effective treatment plan.

Your Appointment, Your Time

Traditional X-ray images need to be developed. To do this, we would have to leave the room and develop them in a separate darkroom. While the images were developed, you would be left alone, your appointment time wasted. Digital X-ray images show up almost immediately on our computer monitor. We don’t ever need to leave the room. This means that your entire appointment is spent with you. We can take the time needed to explain your image. We can help you to understand your diagnosis and go over all of your available treatment plans. We can also take the time to answer any of your questions, allowing you to get the most out of your dental visit.
