Brushing and flossing your teeth every day, though vital, are only a part of a proper oral health care routine. Whether you need a cleaning and exam, or you have an issue that needs to be addressed, professional dental visits are essential for maintaining the health of your mouth. Dental visits help to prevent issues from occurring or prevent them from becoming worse. However, if you have fears or anxiety about going to the dentist, even a routine cleaning and exam can be frightening. At National Dental Sunnyside, we can help to ease your fears with sedation dentistry.
What is Sedation Dentistry?Fear and anxiety about dental visits is a fairly common problem. These fears and anxieties can keep you from scheduling an appointment, whether it’s a serious issue, or if it is for a routine cleaning and exam. Ignoring dental visits can lead to serious oral health complications. The longer you go without treatment, the more you run the risk of requiring more invasive procedures.
When you are anxious, sedation can help. Sedation dentistry is a safe, effective way to allow you to relax and remain calm while you get the treatment you need. Sedation is also effective if:
IV SedationIV sedation is a type of moderate, conscious sedation. It produces similar effects to oral sedation, making you drowsy but keeping you conscious. Rather than taking a medication by mouth, we administer it directly into your bloodstream. Because of this, it goes to work within seconds.
There is a small amount of preparation that needs to be done before your appointment. You must arrive on an empty stomach. You will need to fast for 6 to 8 hours. This includes, in most cases, no water. When you arrive, we will insert a needle either into the back of your hand or your forearm. The IV will be hooked up. Just before your procedure is about to begin, the medication will be administered. Within seconds, you will begin to feel calm and relaxed. Your IV sedation is MD supervised and can be adjusted as needed throughout your procedure to ensure the best results. Once your procedure is over, the medication will be stopped, and the needle removed. Much like with oral sedation, you will need to have someone to drive you home, as the effects of IV sedation can linger.
