Your teeth are an essential feature of your mouth. They allow you to bite and chew your food. They help you to form certain words and sounds by controlling your airflow. They are also a key component in providing you with a beautiful smile. When your teeth are affected by small blemishes, the quality of your smile is diminished. These imperfections can also greatly impact your confidence. At National Dental Sunnyside, we offer veneers as a cosmetic option to give you back your beautiful smile.
What are Veneers?Veneers are thin shell-like restorations that provide an aesthetic fix for minor dental imperfections. They are made to cover the front areas of the teeth that are visible when you smile and can fix a variety of blemishes on your teeth, including:
What are Veneers Made From?Veneers are typically made from one of two materials – composite resin and porcelain. Both of these materials blend in with the color of your natural enamel. At National Dental, we use porcelain for your veneer needs. Porcelain is stronger than composite resin (which is much more susceptible to damage). It is stain resistant. Porcelain also mimics more of the natural properties of your enamel, including light reflection.
How are Veneers Placed? It normally takes two visits to place veneers. During your first visit, we prepare your teeth. This is done under local anesthetic. We remove a small amount of the enamel from the front of your teeth, which ensures that your veneers will sit naturally in your smile. We then take an impression, which we send off to a lab where your veneers are designed and created. It can take up to two weeks for your veneers to be ready. Depending on your specific circumstances, you may or may not need temporary veneers.
Once your final restorations are finished, we will check them for fit and cement them into place. We use a slightly acidic gel to create a rough texture on the surface of your teeth, which will allow for a much more secure fit. Once in place, it will be impossible to tell your veneers from your natural teeth.
Do Veneers Require Special Care?Your veneers can be cared for just like the rest of your natural teeth. You should continue to brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. While porcelain cannot experience decay, the material can still collect plaque and bacteria that contribute to gum disease. Cavities can also form on the exposed areas of your teeth. It is important to maintain your regular 6-month dental visits for cleanings and exams. We will check the condition of your veneers, making sure that they are still in good shape. You should avoid biting on anything hard (like ice or pens), and don’t use your teeth to open packaging. With proper care, your veneers can last 20 years or more.
With veneers, your smile can be restored, and you can smile confidently once again. For more information, or to schedule your appointment, call National Dental Sunnyside today at (718) 925-3365.
