ALL-ON-4® TREATMENT CONCEPT
For decades, missing teeth have been restored with dentures. While still used today, you also have another option – dental implants. Despite implants requiring a surgical procedure, they offer a multitude of benefits over dentures. At National Dental Sunnyside, we provide several options for dental implants, including the All-on-4® Treatment Concept.
Dental implants are a fairly recent addition to your options for replacing missing teeth. They are vastly different from any other option, requiring a surgical procedure. Implants consist of small titanium rods that are inserted into your jawbone. The implants rely on a process known as osseointegration, or the fusion of your jawbone to the rods. This creates a stable support for your replacement teeth.
WHAT ARE ALL-ON-4® TREATMENT CONCEPT IMPLANTS?
When you are missing all of the teeth in either jaw (or both), your replacement teeth can usually be supported on 6 to 8 dental implants. However, for your implants to be successful, and your replacement teeth stable, you need to have sufficient bone mass in your jaw. This will allow for proper fusion. Without enough bone mass, your implants are likely to fail. Even one unstable implant can compromise your entire restoration.
Bone loss occurs naturally after you lose your teeth. The longer you go without replacing your teeth, the more bone mass is lost, decreasing your chances for successful osseointegration. Bone grafts can be used to restore missing bone mass, but a graft is another invasive surgical procedure.
All-on-4® Treatment Concept implants provide an alternative, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of dental implants without the need for a bone graft. Instead of the 6 to 8 implants typically used, your implant supported denture can be successfully supported by only 4. You may be wondering how this is possible with fewer implants. The success of All-on-4® Treatment Concept implants is not in the number of implants but their placement.
ALL-ON-4® TREATMENT CONCEPT IMPLANT PROCEDURE
The surgical procedure for All-on-4® Treatment Concept implants is fairly similar to the procedure for any other dental implants. We begin with a local anesthetic at the surgical sites. If necessary, we can also provide you with sedation to help you relax. We then make incisions in your gums, exposing the jawbone. Holes are drilled, and the implants are placed. Two implants are inserted vertically at the front of your jaw, where there tends to be more bone mass. The other two implants are placed at the back of the jaw (one on each side). They are inserted at a 45-degree angle, which maximizes contact between the bone and the implant. If used in the upper jaw, this will also allow the implants to avoid the sinus cavities, avoiding the need for a sinus lift.
Once your implants have been placed, your gums are sewn closed around the rods. We provide you with temporary teeth, and you go home to begin the healing process. It can take up to a few months to fully heal. During this time, we will monitor the progress of your jaw with several visits. Once your jaw has fully healed, we will place the abutments on the implants and take impressions. Your permanent restorations are designed and created in a lab. When they are ready, we secure them in place with screws.
