Just like you, your child should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day, and flossing daily. They should also have regular dental cleanings and exams, which will help detect and prevent serious oral health issues. However, your child’s mouth is different from yours. It is going through many important changes and developments. Specialized care is needed for your child’s mouth. At National Dental Sunnyside, we can provide this care for your child with dentistry for kids.

Your child should have professional dental cleanings and exams at least twice a year, just like you. During your child’s cleaning, we scrape plaque, tartar (hardened plaque), bacteria and other debris from the surfaces of their teeth. We also get between the teeth and around the gum line. We will also polish your child’s teeth with a special abrasive polish and an electric handpiece.

Once your child’s cleaning is complete, we will move on to performing their oral exam. We inspect their teeth for signs of damage (chips or fractures) and cavities. We will check their gums for signs of infection, such as swelling and redness. We will take a look at the other tissues within their mouth and check their jaw for proper alignment. When our inspection is over, we will then discuss oral health care habits at home with your child (and you, depending on their age). We can provide your child, and you, with ways to improve theirs at home care. If you or your child have any questions, this time will also be used to answer them.

Tooth enamel contains fluoride naturally. However, throughout the day, enamel is lost, weakening the tooth. It can be rebuilt, as fluoride is found in treated water, certain foods, and certain oral products. Children often don’t get the necessary amount of fluoride, so we provide fluoride treatments. These treatments are simple. We apply a gel onto your child’s teeth. The fluoride absorbs into the enamel, providing a barrier against bacterial acids. Fluoride will also collect at the gums and will provide a layer of protection for emerging permanent teeth.

The chewing surfaces of molars are filled with deep crevices, where food, debris, and bacteria can become lodged. It can be difficult for your child to effectively reach these areas with their toothbrush. This can quickly lead to cavities. Sealants are a treatment designed to add a layer of protection. The process is quick and completely pain-free. We apply the sealant material onto their molars and dry it with a special light. Sealants prevent bacteria and debris from hiding in the crevices of your child’s molars while providing a flat, smooth surface that is easier to brush.

Digital X-rays are a critical part of your child’s oral health care plan. They allow us to monitor the development of your child’s teeth and jaws as they grow. We can also detect cavities in their early stages, and take quick action to prevent them from growing worse. With digital X-rays, your child’s radiation exposure is reduced up to 95%.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child is seen for an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. This evaluation is designed to predict your child’s need for orthodontic treatment in their teen years after their permanent teeth have all emerged. Some orthodontic issues can be detected as early as two years old. With some issues, we may be able to take action early, which will prevent the severity of the treatment required later. In some cases, we can eliminate the need for later treatments.
