Your teeth are a critical feature of your mouth, performing many essential tasks. They allow you to bite your food and chew it thoroughly. They help you to form certain words and sounds by controlling airflow. They are also important for a beautiful, confident smile. When you lose your teeth, whether it’s several of them or all of them, it greatly affects all of the functions of your mouth. At National Dental Sunnyside, we offer dentures to restore the functions, and aesthetics, of your mouth.

Tooth loss can occur as a result of several different issues. One of the most common causes of tooth loss is gum disease. Plaque and oral bacteria that build up in your mouth irritate your gum tissue, causing it to swell. As your gums pull away from your teeth, pockets form, and bacteria fall in. The bacteria then go to work attacking your periodontal ligaments and jawbone, causing them to become weak. Your teeth become loose and eventually fall out.

Other causes of tooth loss include:

  • Bruxism (grinding and clenching your teeth).
  • Facial trauma (auto accidents, falls, sports injuries).
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Smoking.

Dentures are one of the oldest methods available for replacing missing teeth, having been in use for hundreds of years. The dentures used today are vastly different from the ones used originally. In fact, they are significantly different from the dentures used just a few decades ago. Technology has allowed for dentures to be made more comfortable, and more natural-looking in appearance.

Dentures are a removable prosthetic device. They consist of acrylic resin teeth set into a hard, acrylic base. The base is supported by your gums and held in place by suction. They are made to be removed every night for cleaning and left out so that your gums have an opportunity to heal.

Complete dentures are designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, whether the teeth are from your top jaw, your bottom jaw, or both. If you have unhealthy teeth that are still in your jaw but are unsalvageable, we will remove these teeth first. We then take an impression of your mouth which is used to design and create your custom fit dentures.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used to replace sections of missing teeth. Like complete dentures, they are made from molds of your mouth. They also have metal clasps, which hook on to your healthy teeth, providing additional support. These dentures should also be removed every night for cleaning.

Dentures require special care. After you remove them, they should be brushed with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste (or soap and water). Avoid using toothpastes, as they can be abrasive against the material for your dentures. Soak your dentures in a cleaning solution, and leave them there overnight. Before you go to bed, brush your remaining teeth (if you have them), along with your gums and other oral tissues. In the morning, brush your teeth and gums again, rinse your dentures and set them in place.

Dentures offer several benefits:

  • They restore your ability to eat your favorite foods, improving your digestion and overall nutrition.
  • Your speech is restored.
  • Your smile (and therefore confidence) is restored.
  • Dentures fill out the loose, sunken skin left behind by missing teeth. In doing so, they can help you to feel younger.
